DIY dog toy tutorial: Upcycling old t-shirts or towels into chew toys

If you're a dog owner, you know that toys can get expensive, especially if your furry friend has a knack for destroying them. But fear not! With a little bit of creativity and some old t-shirts, you can make your own dog toys at home. Not only will you save some money, but you'll also be giving old clothes a second life.

To make these toys, you'll need:

  • old t-shirts or towels (the thicker the fabric, the longer the toy will last)
  • scissors
  • a ruler or measuring tape (optional)
  • dog treats for extra enrichment

Instructions:

  1. Cut your t-shirt into strips. The width of the strips will depend on the size of your dog and their chewing habits. If you have a small dog or a moderate chewer, you can cut the strips to be about 1 inch wide. For larger dogs or heavy chewers, you may want to cut the strips to be about 2 inches wide.

  2. Tie the strips into knots. You can either tie a single knot in the middle of each strip or double knot the ends. Make sure the knots are tight so they don't come undone during playtime.

  3. Optional: If you want to add some extra texture and interest to the toy, you can braid the strips together before tying the knots. OR add a little extra enrichment and hid treats inside each knot!

That's it! You now have a simple and budget-friendly toy for your dog to enjoy. These toys are great for chewing and playing fetch, and they can also be used as a tug toy for interactive play. Just make sure to supervise your dog while they're playing with any homemade toy and replace it when it starts to show signs of wear and tear.

Happy crafting and playtime!
